IS EATING PORK WRONG? By: Patsy Weiser
Hog hunters and pork lovers - has anyone ever told you that it is wrong to eat pork because it says so in the Bible? That would be correct. However, the command they are referring to was given by God in the Mosaic Law in Leviticus 11:7 and Deuteronomy 14:8. This law was part of the Old Covenant which was based on works. The people were given guidelines to put themselves in right-standing with God. Once Jesus came, we became saved by grace and not by works.
In the New Covenant we are told in I Timothy 4: 4, 5 that "every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving; for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer." Romans 14:17 says "for the kingdom of God is not food and drink, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
Many errors are made by well-meaning Christians because they just don't know what the word of God says. They pick and choose parts of verses and take them out of context to try to prove a point. This can be dangerous. Hosea 4:6 says, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge." Also in II Timothy 2:15 we are told to "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." Rightly implies wrongly, therefore we must study the Word of God to stay out of error.
Some people may still choose not to eat pork for various reasons. Therefore, we need to honor their decision and not try to change their mind or serve it to them. God's Word also covers this by saying in Romans 14:21 "It is good neither to eat meat nor drink wine nor do anything by which your brother stumbles or is offended or is made weak." We should not preach our convictions but let everyone work out their own salvation.
If you enjoy eating pork, then give thanks to God for His provision and feel free to do so.
